Safe disposal of waste: sharps
- Sharps containers should be assembled and labelled correctly (date of assembly and disposal)
- Do not fill above manufacturers marked line
- Never re-sheath sharps and dispose of syringe/cartridges as a single unit
- Do not place unnecessary items into sharps containers
- Temporary closure mechanism must be used when not in use or in transportation
- Store containers appropriately and safely
- Needle safety devices to be used if available within setting
- Sharps containers should be disposed of after 3 months, even if not full, to comply with waste guidance
- Keep handling to a minimum, never pass from hand to hand or from one person to another
- Consider the use of wall mounted brackets
