Safe disposal of waste: sharps

Sharps containers should be assembled and labelled correctly (date of assembly and disposal)
Do not fill above manufacturers marked line
Never re-sheath sharps and dispose of syringe/cartridges as a single unit
Do not place unnecessary items into sharps containers
Temporary closure mechanism must be used when not in use or in transportation
Store containers appropriately and safely
Needle safety devices to be used if available within setting
Sharps containers should be disposed of after 3 months, even if not full, to comply with waste guidance
Keep handling to a minimum, never pass from hand to hand or from one person to another
Consider the use of wall mounted brackets
